Protect Your Child’s Vision
August marks Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month, a perfect time to think about your child’s vision and how it impacts their learning, confidence, and overall development. At Eye Clinic Opticians, we’re dedicated to helping young eyes stay healthy, happy, and ready for the year ahead.
Why Children’s Eye Health Matters
A child’s eyesight is vital for everyday life. Clear vision affects:
- Learning – Up to 80% of learning in school is visual, from reading the board to recognising shapes and letters.
- Confidence – Children with uncorrected vision problems may struggle with classroom participation, sports, or social activities.
- Development – Early detection of eye conditions can prevent long-term problems and support healthy visual development.
Some eye conditions in children don’t show obvious symptoms, which is why regular eye examinations are so important. Even if your child seems to see well, underlying issues could still be present.
Early Detection Makes a Difference
The good news is that most childhood eye conditions can be treated successfully if caught early. Eye exams help identify:
- Short-sightedness (myopia), long-sightedness (hyperopia), or astigmatism
- Lazy eye (amblyopia)
- Eye alignment issues (strabismus)
- Other conditions that may affect vision or eye health
There’s no minimum age for an eye exam—a check from the earliest years can make a lifetime of difference.
NHS-Funded Eye Tests for Children
At Eye Clinic Opticians, all children:
- Under 16, or
- Under 19 in full-time education
are entitled to free NHS eye examinations. If spectacles are needed, these can also be covered by the NHS.
We also offer a wide range of comfortable, fun frames your child will be excited to wear, helping them feel confident about their glasses and encouraging consistent use.
What to Expect at Your Child’s Eye Exam
During a child’s eye test, our friendly optometrists will:
- Assess visual acuity and focus
- Check for eye alignment and coordination
- Look for signs of common eye conditions
- Recommend treatment, if required, to ensure healthy vision development
Our goal is to diagnose early, treat effectively, and support your child’s eye health for life.
